INSTITUTE OF TROPICAL MEDICINE AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES (ITROMID)
MAY 2012 INTAKE
Applications are invited for admissions into the following programmes for self-sponsored students in the Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases (ITROMID) starting in May, 2012.

For their training, Diploma, Certificate and Undergraduate students will be based at ITROMID, JKUAT campus

1.         Certificate in HIV/Aids Management                          -           3- Months Programme
2.         Diploma in HIV/AIDS MGT. & Counseling                 -           18- Months Programme
3.         Diploma in Clinical Medicine                                      -           3- Year Programme
4.         B Sc. in Medical Laboratory science                          -           4- Year Programme
5.         Bachelor of Pharmacy                                               -           5-Year Programme
6.         BSc. In Public Health                                                  -           4-Year Programme
7.         B.Sc. in Community Health, & Development             -           4-Year Programme
8.         B.Sc. in Nursing                                                          -           4-Year Programme
9.         B.Sc. in Physiotherapy                                               -           4-Year Programme
10.       B.Sc. in Occupational Therapy                                  -           4-Year Programme

-   K.C.P.E. and 2 years of Secondary School Education and proven involvement in HIV/AIDS community programs.
Community HIV/AIDS Workers

Diploma in HIV/AIDS Management & Counseling
(Full time)

-   K.C.S.E. (or equivalent) aggregate C, C- in English/Kiswahili, Biology
Or
-   K.C.E. Division III, Credit pass in  English/Kiswahili, Biology
Or
-   K.A.C.E. – Principle pass in Biology
Or
   Holder of Certificate in HIV/AIDS Management

Nurses, Clinicians, Workers in CBOs/NGOs, Counselors, Teachers and others in any other  the relevant field.

Diploma in Clinical Medicine

-   K.C.S.E (or equivalent) Mean Grade   C  Plain,     C Plain  in Biology ,  C Plain in  English/Kiswahili;
Additional Subjects, C- (Minus)  in any two of the following:
·          Chemistry
·          Mathematics
·          Physics
·          Physical Science
-  Be a holder of any other qualification accepted by the University Senate as equivalent to any of the above.








Bachelor of Pharmacy  (5 Years)








KCSE Mean Grade C+ (Plus) (or equivalent). In addition a candidate  must have scored the indicated grades in anyone of the two categories;

Category A ,
English /Swahili  Grade B (Plain)
Maths/Physics     Grade C+ (Plus)
Biology                 Grade  B (Plain)
Chemistry            Grade   B (Plain)
Category B
English /Swahili           Grade B (Plain)
Mathematics                Grade C+ (Plus)
Biological Sciences     Grade  B +(Plus)
Physical Sciences       Grade   B+ (Plus)

OR, KACE, 2 (two) Principal  passes in Biology and Chemistry and a subsidiary Pass in Physics or Mathematics.

OR,   KCSE Mean Grade C+ with a Diploma in Pharmaceutical technology, Clinical Medicine or Nursing and       recognized by the relevant regulatory bodies.

Any other qualification accepted by the University Senate as equivalent to any of the above may be considered.

B Sc. in Medical Laboratory Sciences

KCSE Mean Grade  of C+ (Plus). In addition ,  a student must have the following  alternative  combinations of cluster subjects , at the minimum grades shown:
Alternative A
Biology                           C+
Chemistry                       C+
Mathematics/Physics     C+

Alternative B
Biological Sciences          B
Physical  Sciences           B


NB: HND  & Diploma Holders  in MLS  and Registered with KMLTTB   will Join 3rd  Year Level  of the Part Time Module ; ( Part Time on  Fridays, Saturdays  and Sundays)


BSc. In Nursing (4 Years)
Direct entry to Year 1 only;-
KCSE mean grade of C+. In addition, a student must have the following  minimum grades in the respective subjects;

English /Kiswahili                    C+
Mathematics/Physics              C+
Chemistry                                C+
Biology                                    C+

B Sc. in Public Health  

KCSE Mean Grade C+ (Plus) (or equivalent) , C (Plain) in Biology or Biological sciences and Chemistry, C - (Minus) in English/Swahili and C - (Minus) in Mathematics/ Physics,
Or
K.A.C.E.  2 relevant Principal  passes
Or
Diploma or HND in Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Community Health, Human Nutrition, Pharmacy with a KCSE Mean Grade of C (Plain) and C- in Mathematics &  English.

Or, - Be a holder of any other qualification accepted by the University Senate as equivalent to any of the above.

NB: Diploma Holders with Credit Pass will Join 2nd Year Level whereas HND Holders will Join 3rd year Level.

B Sc. in Community Health and Development


KCSE Mean Grade C+ (Plus) (or equivalent) , C+ (Plus) in Biology or Biological sciences, C (Plain) in English/Swahili, C (Plain) in any two: Mathematics , Chemistry or Physics or Mathematics, physical Science, Geography/Agriculture

Or  K.A.C.E.  2 relevant Principle passes
Or Diploma or HND in Community Health Development, Clinical Medicine, Public Health,  Human Nutrition, Pharmacy with a KCSE Mean Grade of C (Plain) and C- in Mathematics &  English.


Or - Be a holder of any other qualification accepted by the University Senate as equivalent to any of the above.

NB: Diploma Holders with Credit Pass will Join 2nd Year Level whereas HND Holders will Join 3rd year Level.
(Full Time & Part Time on  Fridays, Saturdays  and Sundays)
BSc. In Physiotherapy (PT)

&

BSc. In Occupational Therapy (OT)

-(4 Years)
1.      Direct entry- Here candidates shall have obtained a mean grade of at least C+ at K.S.C.E. or it s equivalent and passed with at least a “C+ “in the subject clusters indicated.
  1.   Alternative A:
         Biology and Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, English or Kiswahili
b. Alternative B:
            Biology Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, English or Kiswahili
      Or
      K.A.C.E 2 or more principals with one in Biology and in Chemistry. 

2.      Conversion entry program
Entry at year 2- Candidates must be holders of a Diploma in OT/PT from a recognized Medical Training Institution or its equivalent as recognized by JKUAT.
Or,
     Entry at Year 3- These are the Diploma Holders in OT/PT  and a Higher Diploma in Health related program recognized by JKUAT. 
 
(a)    In addition, the candidates MUST be registered with the respective national professional bodies.  Foreign trained Therapists must be registered with their respective   professional associations in their respective countries of training. They must also be compliant with all the respective professional associations   in Kenya.
(b)        All applicants for this Conversion programme must have professional experience for a period not less than three years.

3.      Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by JKUAT Senate may also be considered for admission. In addition the applicant must meet specific faculty requirements during the four years of program.

Application procedure and deadline
Candidates seeking admission are required to fill application forms obtained from the offices indicated below upon payment of non-refundable application fees of Kshs.1,000/- for Diploma and Kshs.1,500/- for under graduate and post graduate courses. Completed application forms should be returned not later than Saturday  31st  March, 2012.
