APPLICATION FOR POSTGRADUATE
SCHOLARSHIPS 2011/2012 FINANCIAL YEAR

The Higher Education Loans Board is a state corporation mandated to finance

Kenyans pursuing higher education in recognized institutions through provision of loans, bursaries and scholarships. It is also charged with the responsibility of recovering loaned out funds to university students to create a revolving fund which will enable it meet its mandate.

Postgraduate students enrolled in Kenyan public or private universities recognized by the Commission for Higher Education (CHE), are invited to apply for consideration for Masters and PhD scholarship for the 2011/2012 academic year.

Masters students will qualify for a scholarship worth Kshs 200,000 tenable over two academic years, while PhD candidates will qualify for Kshs 450,000 tenable over three academic years.

Requirements for Scholarship
• Minimum of second class upper division;
• Admission to a local public or private university recognized by CHE;
• Reporting for 1st year of study in 2011;
• Age 30 years below for Masters;
• 40 years or below for PhD.

Kenyatta University Scholarships 2011/2012 Academic Year

  • Scholarships for Orpahans and Vulnerable Students (OVS)
Kenyatta university is offering two (2) Scholarships for OVS from Kenya seeking to pursue undergraduate degree at KU. The sholarships will cover the full tuition cost beginning the academic year 2011/2012 for OVS who have already been admitted to KU pfogrammes.

Program Requiremnts: Mean grade C+ in 2009 of 2010 KCSE

  • OVS Scholarships for Continuing Students
There are ten (10) partial scholarships for tuition for full time students already in session at KU for the year beginning September 2011/2012. The scholarship will cover 40% tuition costs beginning the academic year 2011/2012 for student with proven high performance and genuine need of financial assistance.
  • KUSA Scholarships
There are TEN (10) Partoal Scholarships for tuition for full time students who must have been in session in  previous semester. The scholarship will cover 25% tuition costs beginning the academic year 2011/2012 for student with proven high performance and genuine need of financial assistance.
  • KU Internal busary
KU internal busaries are for students already enrolled into KU programmes and are awarded based on the need of vulnerable students. The application should be supported by a letter from either the principal/ Head  Teacher, Chef, or Pastor.

KU Postgraduate Scholarships
The university will give TWENTY (2) postgraduate scholarships to cover tuition for the masters programme. These scholarships will be awarded to graduate students admitted in September 2011/2012 academic year and will be based on proven high academic performance. The application is made through the Dean Graduate School

All interested applicants must submit the following to the KU financial Aid Office by July 15th 2011

The MSc. is offered via distance learning with online support, as well as residential teaching workshops with the university of Nairobi's Faculty opf veterinary medicine. The programme is designed for veterinary and other animal health specialists working in desease control and prevention.

Entry Requirements:

To study MSc, Students must have either a second class honours degree, of the equivalent, in scientific subject, veterinary medicine, animal science, agriculture, zoological sciences or medicine, or a second class honours degree or the equibalent in a scientific disciplin, which has in the opinion of the university, included suitable training.

English Language Requirment

All applicants must provide evidence of their English language ability. Applicants whose first language is not english must provide documentary evidence that they have, no more than three years prior to the application, either been educated or worked in English for aminimum of 18 months, or passed a test of English Proficiency.

The Aga Khan Foundation Scholarship

The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The price of travel isn’t included in AKF scholarships

The Aga Khan Foundation supplies a limited number of scholarships every year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who’ve no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis by way of a competitive application procedure once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master’s level courses but is also willing to take into consideration applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are needed for the career objectives of the student. Requests will also be considered for travel and study awards for PhD students performing their study in Third World countries on topics judged to be of interest to the Aga Khan Development Network. Applications for short-term courses aren’t considered; neither are applications from students who’ve already began their course of study.

Geographic Scope

The Foundation accepts applications from countries where it has branches, affiliates or other AKDN agencies which can support with processing applications and interviewing applicants. At present, these are Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada.

Selection Criteria
The major criteria for choosing award winners are:
1.outstanding academic records,
2.genuine monetary will need,
3.admission to a reputable institution of higher learning and
4.thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans.

Candidates are also evaluated on their extra-curricular interests and achievements, possible to acquire their objectives and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment. Applicants are expected to have some years of work encounter in their field of interest.

Loan Conditions

Half of the scholarship quantity is considered as a loan, which will need to be reimbursed with an annual service charge of 5%. A guarantor is needed to co-sign the loan agreement. The payback period is five years, beginning six months after the study period funded by the Aga Khan Foundation.

Application Procedures
The application procedures of AKF’s International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Students could acquire application forms as of January 1st every year from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services / Boards in their countries of present residence. Completed applications will need to be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained, or to the address indicated on the front of the form. They will need to not be sent to Geneva.

Commonwealth citizens Schoolarships

E L I G I B I L I T Y


To apply for the awards covered in this prospectus, candidates should:
• Be Commonwealth citizens, refugees, or British protected persons ( Kenya is a member of the commonwealth countries)
• Be permanently resident in a Commonwealth country other than the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man
• Be available to commence their academic studies in the United Kingdom by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2011

• Hold, by October 2011, a first degree of upper second class Honours standard (or above); or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification, which will normally be a Master’s degree

German Scholarship

There are 24 fellowships available (12 for East Africa) for students and young graduates for a 5 week seminar to be held between the 14th and 29th August 2011 in Germany and March 2012 in Kenya.
